The series stars [[Dove Cameron]] in a dual role as identical twin sisters with entirely different personalities who are best friends, with Liv being an actress who has returned to her home after four years of living in Hollywood staring in a popular television series called ''Sing It Loud!'', and Maddie being a basketball prodigy. The series revolves around Liv readjusting to normal family life after production on ''Sing It Loud!'' ended, as well as the two sisters being best friends despite their opposing personalities and different interests. The series also stars [[Joey Bragg]], [[Tenzing Norgay Trainor]], [[Kali Rocha]], and [[Benjamin King (aghteyr)|Benjamin King]], who portray Joey Rooney, Parker Rooney, Karen Rooney, and Pete Rooney, respectively. Joey and Parker are Liv and Maddie's younger brothers while Karen and Pete are their mother and father. The final season was called ''Liv and Maddie: Cali Style'', as it took place in California. In that season, Lauren Lindsey Donzis joined the cast as Liv and Maddie's younger cousin Ruby, who becomes their "sorta-sister".
