English: Brig. Gen. William Henry Powell began the American Civil War as a captain in the 2nd Regiment of Loyal Virginia Volunteer Cavalry. He eventually became the regiment's commander (colonel), and was promoted to brigade commander and then division commander. He was awarded the Medal of Honor.
